I usually will not write an article or update except to describe new tactics or to promote employee advocacy. However, I felt the need to give a brief update on what we are experiencing in the new organizing era as it pertains to union drives.
So many of the union tactics are underground, we sometimes miss the opportunity for prevention and we have been doing more and more prevention. Disturbingly, we have come across more deceit and lies from the the unions during organizing campaigns unlike anything in the past. In the past, union organizers “stretched the truth” or purposely geared the employees into different topics. However that has changed.
During the most recent campaign against the PASNAP, assisted by the USW and perhaps even being coordinated by the NNU, the PASNAP clearly misguided the employees by total fabrication. While in the past, we would not answer a union flyer, it was truly amazing that employees were brainwashed already and believed the lies. This made for us to change our game plan again and expose the lies. We ended the PASNAP streak of winning and not losing in the past 4 years with a decisive victory and no objections, but a lesson was learned.
Recently, in another campaign, we are seeing the same thing in the hospitality industry. Deceit is omnipresent. The key to the prevention is educating the employees prior to a petition. If any company is afraid of talking about the bog “U” word, that is the wrong strategy. The “U” word is all around them. The key is to get to the employees before the deceit does. Deceit alters their perception and as we all know, perception is reality.
